THE BIG PICTURE
Now that we have taken a realistic look at marriage and examined our own reasons for wanting to get married, letâs look at one more important piece of information that will help us stop being squeamish when we read Paulâs words about having the âgiftâ of singleness.
There are some days when I slave away at work for hours and hours, staring at the computer screen in front of me. I am so consumed in doing work that I barely let my eyes leave the screenâeven to look at the food Iâm eating for lunch.
Then, at the end of the day, I get up to leave, and as I walk to my car, I notice an interesting thing happening. I have a very hard time focusing on anything that is not the same distance from me as my computer screen was. I try to read signs that are far away, but they are all a blur. My eyes were so focused on what was immediately in front of me that I can barely understand what is far away, no matter how hard I squint.
I do this at work, but it is so similar to what I do in my life as well. I get so focused on my worries, my fears, the things right in front of me, that I forget my life is part of a much bigger picture.
I am especially guilty of doing this when it comes to singleness. It haunts my thoughts of the present, it haunts my thoughts of the future, and it feels like there is no way to see life besides through the single lens. If you do this, too, let me show you the big picture. Here is a depiction of what our single lives look like in the scheme of eternity:
